Reflection for APK class - Hafizi

Hi all,

This post is just about my reflection through out the entire week of APK 2.0 class. I will just summarized what i have learnt from this new syllabus of APK subject. From the first class, when i heard the lecturer said that there will be new syllabus on this subject and no more selling things, i've thought that this will be become bored class. But my thought on that have completely change when go through out the class every week.

What I have learnt ?
To be honest, i have learnt a lot of new knowledge from this APK 2.0 class. The real industrial mentors which came to teach us the proper way to start a business really open my eyes. The mentor, Mr Bernard from Founders Lab company have done a good job in teaching us with his great spirit to make sure we get something useful in the end of the class. The first thing that i have learnt is how to find a good problem. It is important to find a good problem because from good problems then we can find the good solution and came out with good product. One way that i learnt how to find good problem is to do the why, why, why analysis. From this analysis, then we can get the root of the problem and find the solution from it.

I also learnt to do the business model, but Mr. Bernard have more interesting way to do the business model by bringing the business model canvas to us. The business model canvas have really simplified everything that we need to have in our business model and it is also easy to understand even for a new learners like all of us. Mr. Bernard have explained to us how to complete each block in the canvas and then complete our business model.

Next i learnt about how important the customer feedback to our business. This is because, once our business model canvas completed, the mentor have ask us to go out from class and approach our potential customer to present our business model to them. This is important as we can get many feedback from our customer and improve our product.

Finally, i learnt that nowadays, to make our business more successful, we have to do rapid prototyping the product. This is mean that, once we get the basic information about our product , then we can prototype it and present it again to our customer. If there is any improvement, feedback from customer, then we improve our prototype and the same process start again until we get the complete and good product. That is what we called rapid prototyping.

Applied what i have learnt
How do i applied what i have learnt from this class? Actually i have a dream to start my own business in the future and i'm sure by getting this good knowledge from our mentor, Mr Bernard, it will be useful to me in the future once i want to start the business because i already have proper guide from this APK 2.0 class.

I think that all for now and i'm really enjoy during all the APK class because i have awesome mentors, and  awesome group members. Thanks to all. See you again

Reflection 5th week (7-10-2012) - LSY

Today Task: We were require to carry out survey on potential user of our system and get feedback
                             from them.

When Mr.Bernard told us that, we were all very excited and scare all at the same time. We are excited before we finally can get out there and approach our future customer and scare before i were prepare what we are suppose to as them.
Our first target was a failure because all of us sounded nervous and he did not have a clear picture of what our system is. However, after that we started to warm out and manage to carry out the survey smoothly. From the survey, we got many positive feedback and ideas. Therefore also some negative feedback but this feedback gave us idea on how to improve our system which i feel was very useful.
After the survey, we went back to class, each group are asked to summarized our survey's results. I was selected to represent my group. However, i admit i was a very nervous and even say wrongly a few things. But well, is a good try right.
I felt that i learnt a lot from this class, i learnt that although you might think your idea is super special and great but in actual fact, other people might not think so. Therefore, this taught us that when want to create something new, we must make sure that people will uses it, if not there is no point even implementing it. Overall, i had a fun time in class today and with activities lecture time really passes fast..HAHA

Reflection 5th week(7-10-2012) - Ching Sin

The class is started on time today. Bernard asked whether everyone finish fill in the canvas of business model. Then he let some students share what they learned from the Drupal's introduction class. Then, he said our university wish to make 5% from total graduates become an entrepreneur. Due to government reduce the refunds to university, our university hopes that the students who going to graduates can help them get some money through some entrepreneurship program.

After that Bernard said he will let us do about customer relations. He let us go everywhere we want but we have to manage back to lecture hall within one hour. He hoped we can find 15 person from our customer segment, sell our idea to them and get their feedback. He said the more people give bad comments, the chance we do better and near to what targeted customer needs.

We actually find a lot of foreigner to get their feedback. We also ask some opinions from the owner of the cafe in our faculty. From this survey, I learned to know how to elicit requirements and what are the requirements that user want.

After one hour, we back to lecture hall with only 12 responders. We summarize the comments we got and share to our classmates. We also listened about the results that other groups get.

Bernard want us to make rapid prototyping for our product and share it in the next class. Madam Ponmalar reminds us to change the business model to business plan in the coming mid semester holiday.

We have 2 jobs to complete which are:

  • Rapid prototyping
  • Produce business plan from business model

by Ching Sin (Ally) WEK090067

Result of our simple survey

Total number of responder: 12

Question:
1. Easy to find Halal food? No (100%)
2. Have experience using similar website? Yes(50%), No(50%)
3. How they find Halal food?

  • through friends
  • websites
  • special deal websites
4. Main concern?
  • Go same restaurant
  • Cheap
5. If this application is implemented, will they use? (100%)

Suggestion features for this website:
  • Menu of restaurant is attached
  • Show promotions and discounts that can get from this website

For the question 1, from the foreigners that we asked, their perception is that Malaysia is a Islamic country which has Halal food everywhere. They said they really got the Halal logo in a lot of restaurant, therefore it is not difficult to get Halal food. Besides, they comments about some restaurant do not have Halal logo but they still will go in if they see some local Muslims are inside the restaurant. It's because they feel confident to enter when see Muslims are inside there.

For question2, some of them used this kind of application before but the website they used are not only search for Halal food. Some of them do not think there is a need to use this type of website to seek food since the Halal restaurants are everywhere. Besides, some of the responder mentioned about the website do not help much because they cant really know what the food is selling in the restaurant without menu integrated in the websites.

In question 3, foreigners are finding food through their friends mostly. They are very confident with their friends' recommendation but not through websites. Some responder find some special deal and they buy it after they got some information about the restaurant from other websites or friends. They willing to find through website in this because normally the special deals are cheap and worth.

So, their main concerns are going to the same restaurant. ask the in charge person of restaurant whether they sell Halal food, and they prefer promotions.

All of them comments they will use this application if it is implemented.

After this survey, we know that we need to make our application is really reliable for foreigners.

Reflection on 4th week(31-10-2012) - Ching Sin

Bernard was late because he slept late but he got a powerful alarm to wake him up from his bed. The alarm was the news that his friend passed away.

What we do and learned?
A group was directed by Bernard to tell us what they learned while there were doing on the business model. They told us what is the answer of them in each canvas. Then, they explained about the function of each canvas  and how the canvas are connected.

The canvas in business model are separated to two parts which is known as left brain and right brain. The left part of the business model is known as right brain and it consists of key partners, key resources, key activities and cost structure. The right part of business model which known as left brain is consists of customer segments, channels, customer relations and revenue streams. The value proposition which located at center is directly connected with the left brain while it is indirectly connected to the left brain.

Then Bernard told us when he was at Silicon Valley at the earlier of this year and he met two Google developer and they invited them to the company. They visit the room and saw big business model on the wall and they persuade the Google developers to make some content of the business model online. Finally the developers agree to put one sample online. The class was end with Bernard show the Google business model sample to us and give some explanations.
