Reflection on 3rd week(24-10-2012) - Ching Sin

Our class was held at lobby of our faculty instead of at lecture hall. Besides, Bernard bring another guest, Hadi(I hope that I did not state wrong his name ^^) to share his experience to us at the end of the class.

What I learned and do in the class?

Bernard asked, what is business model in our mind. He let us discuss among group members without google it. The definition of business model of our discussion is the structure for a company know current capabilities and make a strategic planning to reach the business goals.
The keywords that given by Bernard are structure, showcase end to end, goal.

Next, we learn about what is customer segment. Customer segment(CS) means the category fo customer that we aimed. In this class, I learned that the customer segment should not be too broad.  To start a business successfully, I should narrow down the customer segment first. In our problem, the targeted customer segment is the new coming foreign Muslims who are less than 60years old and will work and stay at KL or Selangor.

Then, we discussed about value proposition (VP). Value proposition is the value of a product that may let the customer change the product they always use to my product. By searching around the application that available in internet, we realise that the applications are in Malay language. Our application will show in the language that our targeted  customer segment prefer.
Besides, our application will have crossover with JAKIM. The intention is to make sure all the restaurants that we shows are really get the Halal certificate from JAKIM. This may let the customer have their food without any worries.

How do i feel?

This class really make me learnt a lot about entrepreneurship that I may not learn from lecture or class. Thanks.

The Why Analysis

Hi all, from the previous class we also have been asked to do a the "why analysis" on problem that we have choose earlier. As Mr. Bernard said to our class, the purpose of this analysis method is to find the root of the problem that we are focusing now and find the solution from there. So, by do a discussion among our group members, we have came out with the "why analysis" diagram for our problem.

Diagram of "WHY Analysis" (click on picture for better view)

From the "WHY Analysis" that we have done above, we can identified the root of this problem and also possible solution for this problem.

Problem Statement : The problem is no centralized information about all the restaurant available.

That's all for now, see you again soon.

The Identified Problems

Hi to all readers of our blog, as we go into 2nd class with Mr Bernard we have been given a task to identify the problem in industry, do the analysis on the problem and find the possible solutions to the problem. After we have brainstorm and  do a discussion among our group members, we have identified two problems which is :

1. Problem in Hotel Industry

  • From the observation and some information on internet, we can said that the main problem in this   industry is that the most of the hotel company have difficulty to find customers to stay at their hotel and from the customers or user side, they also have problem in finding the suitable hotel to stay according to their need. When there is no customers come to stay at their hotel, this mean that they not making any money and will lead them to serious problem.
      Possible Idea for Solution
  • We have think about one possible solution which is we develop a web based application to become the platform for the hotel company and also the customer or users . Which means that the hotel company can provide all their hotel details to the system and the system will save all the information. When the users use the system to find the suitable hotel to stay, they will be asked to fill in some information related to his/her needs. Then, once completed the system will do the matching with all the information that we have on the system and suggest the suitable hotel for the users/customers to stay.

2. Problem to Find Halal & Non-Halal Food Restaurant
  • This is our second problem. From the interview to local and international people contributed to the figure the main problem. We find that it is hard to find halal & non-halal food stalls or restaurant that are not familiar to them near their current location especially when we are new to the place. This problem  not be faced by local people only  but also  international tourist who are come from Islamic country.
       Possible Idea for Solution
  • We need to develop web based system which can gathered the information of halal  & non-halal food of restaurant or  food stall in Malaysia.
  • We will specify the place and state.User just need to choose to eat  in food stall or restaurant, then enter their current location,Exp:Kajang then the system will display the food stall or  restaurant in Kajang with specific description related to the address of restaurant or food stall location and food display with price.
Based on discussion about this two problems, all of us agreed to take our second problem which is about the halal and non-halal food restaurant as our main focus. We will proceed with YYY analysis of this problem and will post it here.

Thanks for visiting. See you soon =)

Reflection on 2nd week(17-10-2012) - Ching Sin

Same as usual, the class started late but the different is Bernard brought a junior, Rayson to share what he went through in joining the Founderslab.

   What I learn?

I can remember the 'mantera' that Bernard taught last week which are good problem, simple idea, awesome people.

This week, I learned we need to produce a product that fulfill these: minimum viable product (MVP), rapid prototype and customer recognition.
MVP means the product must have the minimum features that can support maximum number of customer. Rapid prototype means the product don't need to be perfect  but have the basic requirements is enough to release, Customer recognition means the product must let consumer has deep impression on it so that they can recognise it.

Besides, we learned the way to find the solution and think critically when find the causes of problems. With the why, why, why thinking, I manage to think in correct way.

   How do i feel?

This class is interesting because the way Bernard teach is fun. He understand what we feel in the class normally. He shared his experience and he said he will try to find the fun thing in class if he is given another chance. I did keep this in my mind.

I hope this course wont need us to develop another application because we are quite heavy with the projects  from different courses and final year project as final year student.

   How i apply?

If I want to make my own business in future, I can apply what I learnt from this class to my business so that my business will be a success business. I need to take lessons of succeed and failure from Bernard as my lessons.

Reflection on 2nd week (17-10-2012) : LSY

This is the second lecture. I do anticipate what is waiting for us every time i enter class. As usual, classes did not start in time and students are still coming in late including me...Guess this is one of the bad habits that we will need to take forever to change...lol

   What we learn?

This week we learn to deal with the root cause of a problem and provide solutions to it. Bernard provided us with many examples and teach us to use the yyy analysis to arrive at the root cause of the problem. A very good example was from group 1 that mentioned about the inefficiency in baggage distribution, most of us will think that the cause to this problem is no proper system, but thinking deeply through the yyy analysis, its actually the people that is causing the problem...it made us realize that we usually think of things only on the surface.

   How do i feel?

Actually class 2 gave me mixed feeling. I am happy to learn something new but at the same time sad and worried after being informed that we need to develop a prototype. My first thought was added workload as we have already 4 system in hand that need to be develop. However, i am still taking this optimistically and hope that we will make our way through it as a exciting challenge and learning platform.

   How i apply?

What i learn last week was very useful. I applied it in my FYP and started to think from a few  different perspectives when i was asked to develop objectives to my system.

Good problem - Simple solutions - Awesome people

What I have learn in class.

His hardship is not wasted because finally he can developed simple system. He just show us the scratch only which the first stage of his website.
We learn from his experience that never give up in the future."Kalau kita melakukan semua yang kita upaya lakukan, sesungguhnya kita akan tekejut dengan hasilnya".

 How do I feel.

There is no obstacle for us to develop our own website related to the problem we have found.I feel more energetic to develop our group website.

Where and How I apply.

When I want to make my own business ,I can apply what I have learn during this week of APK 2.0.There are always risk  in business environment. So,never give up.

Reflection on 1st week (10/10/2012) - LSY

     Hi ,

People who are reading this and my dear groupies!!!

Last week I entered class full of excitement because lecturer told us that there will be people from the industry coming in to teach us, like many others i am anxious to know how that person look like, will he be boring, will the class be just another typical lecture class.

As i arrived, i didnt see many students there, my first thought was arent they scare that they need to stand in front of the class. LOL. I walk forward to my friends and that is when i saw a stranger in the lecture room. He was sitting right at the corner playing his APPLE notebook. This guy must be rich i thought! I and my friend started to discuss that maybe he is our new lecturer. Indeed, when class start at 9 a.m. this fellow went to the front and started talking.

My first impression of him during the first 17 minutes wasnt good, but when he started talking and asking us questions, i realized that this guy is not simple man. Woooo.....

Class went on and it was a very interesting class, no boring theory, no boring slides but great time for us to think outside the box and learn things that are not written down in the book. Mr. Bernard told us stories, gave us IQ questions and told us that as final year student we really need to catch up with the society. I think what he say was really true.

I learnt that i should reflect and realized that to be successful i cannot carry on my life like what i am doing now, I learnt that dont judge the book by its cover like how i misjudge Mr.Bernard and I learnt that there is a will, there is a way after listening to all the success stories of the young entrepreneur that was introduced to us.

I feel like shit, i asked myself what am i doing now complaining about my thesis, people are already businessman/women earning millions. I feel a sense of admire towards those people that make it to what they having now.

I dont know exactly how i could apply what i learnt, but i took Mr.Bernard advice and started reading newspaper. Hopefully this will be the first step for greater improvement.

Before i go, I just want to say to my groupies, add oil in this final semester, we are and will be awesome as a group cause we are awesome people right!

Reflection on 1st week(10/10/2012) - by Ally

The class started late because the techinicians were putting the tables with computer and others thing back the original place.

Finally the class started, a guest lecturer asked us what was happened in the past 17 minutes.
We must alert to everything happen around us, we can find out the new needs from people and get our business there.

Then he said, we, students with stupid faces will see him, with stupid face for this coming 6 weeks. He said he never think whether we remember his name, what comes on my mind is did he told his name? I asked my friend and she said no.

Finally he introduced himself... He is Bernard who are founder for Founderlab. He introduced his colleagues also. He asked us about the difference between entrepreneur and entrepreneurial. In order to create our business, we need to make changes for simpler life. Create a new thing may have 2 results which are earn a lot of money or totally no income because the new thing is not usable and attractive.

He gave us a question and asked us find the solution. He explained psychological inertia which is tends to reject for changes. We always think too complicated while something is actually very simple. So we cannot see

At the end of the class, he told us what should we do for this APK2.0 class and what we have to prepare for next week class.
